H1N1

So my brother called me the other day, and we got to talking about the H1N1 vaccine. I asked him what he thought of it. My doctor recommended we get it, and the Girls' pediatrician did too. I have heard from different people that the vaccine is too new, has mercury in it, hasn't been tested in the US, and of coarse causes crazy side effects. Even though I heard a bunch of bad things about this virus, I think about what happens if one or both of my girls got the flu, like we did last year and got really sick, like we did last year. We were out of it for 5 days last year, Justin was down 7. I was only REALLY sick for only a day and a half, but we missed work, Erica missed school, and it was scary. I didn't feel good for at least a week, it really takes a lot of you. plus I was pregnant with Emma at the time. I just know I don't want to go through that again, especially with a 5 month old added to it.

I have called my doctor and was put on a waiting list for the vaccine, I called the girls' doctor and they said they are only taking in 6 months to 36 months right now, that when more become available, they will open the age group more, and to call back weekly to see when that happens. Freedom Hill, in Sterling heights has had a mass clinic the last couple Saturdays and some Wednesday, Thursdays thrown in there also. but the lines they show on the news are insanely crazy, 4 hours or so...The Palace of Auburn Hills has a clinic too but it was only residents of Oakland county, so we don't qualify.

So my brother tells me, he and his wife got the shot at a clinic in Detroit, there was no lines when they went and it took them a total of 8 minutes (they went during the week) and they were taking the kids on Saturday. We ended up going with them, and got in line at 11am. We were numbers 69-74...and were done and out in an hour.

I am glad we got it done. I believe when you get the shot, you don't get the flu as bad as you would if you didn't, if you get the flu at all. I also believe the benefits out way the risks, and my peace of mind is worth it.

For more information on getting a H1N1 vaccine around town, check out the free clinics on FREEP! We went to the Herman Kiefer Pathways Center today.

My pediatrician said it has ethyl mercury which does not stay on your system long like thermal mercury. He says there is no more mercury in it than a can of tuna, but yes...they did not remove the mercury. He also said that we will be getting the same shot next year as our normal flu shot....so I broke down and did it. At least, Lukas got his...his doctor happened to have it.
