Book club!

So a friend from High school invited me to join a book club she is in with a bunch of ladies. The idea of reading a book, meeting up with a bunch of gals at a restaurant and talking about the book, sounded like a damn good time to me! So I...almost read the book, I tried to...really, but this book was pretty hard to get through. I felt so bad that I didn't read the book that I almost didn't go...but I did. I'm so glad I did! When I got to the restaurant and sat down, one of the girls asks me...so...how did you like the book? I said ya know, I just could not get into it and I didn't read the whole thing. She laughed and said...oh that's great, I'm not the only one!

The Book is called Animal, Vegetable, Miracle, and is about a family that makes a pledge to grow all their own food, or get it from local farmers for an entire year. Its about supporting your local region, eating only what is in season in the region you are in and realizing how many miles your food has to travel to get to your local grocery store. It was very interesting in the beginning but was so detailed about how to plant things, and where and when...I was just lost. It does make you realize though that fruits we get at our grocery stores are from places that have sun all year round, and are pretty far away. I also didn't even know when certain fruits and veggies are in season, we are so spoiled by getting whatever we want, whenever we want, that we don't need to know this information. Since reading the book though, I have at least made an effort to visit our local fruit and veggies stands in our area, and they really do have the freshest and cheapest stuff around. But seriously, and its sad to say, but I can barely go a week without eating McDonald's or some kind of fast food, let alone a year with eating only stuff I grow in my yard!

It was a really fun night though, I love to read, but don't set aside time to as much as I should. I also don't seek out good books to read, and I wanted to join this book and read books and talk about them with the gals, and also get ideas from them about good books they have read. I'm really looking forward to curling up and reading more books when I get a chance, and also going out and having dinner with a group of fun girls, and talking about books and whatever else we want to for a couple hours once a month:)
If anyone else is interested in joining me next month, let me know, its a real good time!

Rhonda, it sounds fun, but what about a poor persons one at my house? Or we all could rotate homes if you guys want? Maybe I'll post this on Facebook, see who else is interested. I have the perfect started book, too.

The Big A, you always say reading gives you a headache! I would die to have a book club, I have one friend who has one but she lives two hours away so I wont join hers.

we could easily do a bring a dish to pass dinner type thing. that would be perfect. a rule they have at my other book club is do a book at least a year old so you can get it at the library.

could be fun:)

I can read Aim, but in very short sessions...or I have to get the books on tape! I can do that. But it would be better for us all if it was on the weekend! After all it's only 1 time a month!
